*THIS IS HISTORY — THE TUDORS* *Episode 5: Traders and Traitors* An emperor loses a leg. England gets a headache. In 1493, surgeons saw off the gangrenous leg of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III. It is a brutal, miraculous operation. The emperor survives, briefly. Then comes a funeral, a court gathering, and a diplomatic ripple that rolls all the way to Tudor England. There, Henry VII has bigger problems than imperial orthopaedics. Pretender Perkin Warbeck attends Emperor Frederick’s funeral and is welcomed as England’s king-in-waiting. In the pews, Warbeck collects royal patrons, noble endorsements and invitations to Europe's most exclusive parties. Nothing attracts support quite like almost being king. Henry responds with spies, executions and a trade war. His economic weapon backfires, leaving English merchants furious and London in disorder. Markets wobble. Tempers fray. And somewhere across the sea, a fantasy is beginning to acquire ships. – Don't forget to catch this week's bonus episode where Dan gets knee-deep into the remarkable amputation of Emperor Frederick III — a moment that went down in medical and artistic history. Plus, we get into the economy stupid: Dan gives a primer on how Henry VII’s ill-fated trade war really rankled English merchants. Last week, we took a look at the first hundred years of crusading, and the tactics involved in fighting in and around the crusader kingdoms of the Middle East. In this episode, we follow the crusaders as they shift their lens southward to Egypt, and make a bold attempt to capture one of the biggest prizes of the day. This week, Danièle speaks with Thomas Smith about why the Fifth Crusade targeted Egypt in the first place, how this campaign differed from the many that had come before, and just how close this crusade came to changing history as we know it.

This podcast is made possible by the generous support of listeners like you! Did one of the Princes in the tower survive!? The Lambert Simnel affair might be over, but Henry VII has another pretender on his hands — a pesky Flemish fella called Perkin Warbeck. His agenda: claiming to be Prince Richard, the lost son of Edward IV, AKA one of the princes in the tower. As absurd as his claim may sound, Perkin poses a real problem for Henry. There's no proof that Perkin isn’t who he claims to be... there’s no grave, no proof the real prince is really dead. What’s more, he is backed by Charles VIII of France and the vengeful Margaret of Burgundy. It’s a dangerous combination. – Don't forget to catch this week's bonus episode where Dan delves deeper into history behind each episode. This week, Dan tells producer Al why Henry Tudor’s enemies thought dress-up was the best strategy and why Charles VIII of France lets England off the hook. A conversation with Derek Krueger (University of North Carolina at Greensboro) on homoerotic language and imagery in the works of Symeon the New Theologian (eleventh century). These passages are unusual enough that earlier editors and scholars were made uncomfortable about them. We discuss their devotional context but also the broader context of homoeroticism and homophobia in the monastic world of that time. The conversation is based on Derek's recent monograph, Monastic Desires: Homoeroticism, Homophobia, and the Love of God in Medieval Constantinople (Cambridge University Press 2026).
If there’s one topic that continually draws people to the Middle Ages, it’s the Crusades. Templars, assassins, nomadic horse archers, in what is at times a very hostile environment makes for a history that regularly turns on a knife edge. But the story of the Crusades is much bigger, geographically, culturally, and politically than the same old stories would suggest. This week, Danièle speaks with Nicholas Morton about the wider world of the Crusades, the cultural and technological exchange it led to, and the importance of some forgotten individuals from this moment in history.

This podcast is made possible by the generous support of listeners like you! It turns out, that saying you’re the king just because you’ve put a crown on your head, means plenty of others can get the same idea. And in 1487, a 10-year-old boy claims that he is England’s true king. A cast of Irish rebels, German mercenaries, and renegade Yorkist lords throw their weight behind him. Pretty soon, the challengers find themselves at the Battle of Stoke. The trouble is, Henry doesn’t show up. – Don't forget to catch this week's bonus episode where Dan delves deeper into the Tudor’s rocky reign. This week, Dan tells producer Al how the Battle of Stoke came to be fought and why it’s much more significant than it’s often remembered. They later discuss the strange fate of Lambert Simnel - from pretender king to kitchen worker. England gets a counterfeit king… well, almost. Determined to destroy Henry VII, the implacable Margaret of Burgundy backs an audacious Yorkist conspiracy. Following the aftermath of Pydna in 167, the Attalid dynasty in Pergamon enjoyed the next three decades as the most preeminent Greek power in the Aegean while competing with neighboring powers like Bithynia and the Galatians. Yet when Attalus III Philometor died childless in 133, his will dissolved the kingdom and bequeathed much of it to his official heir and executor, the Roman Republic. A bastard son of Eumenes II named Aristonicus rose up to claim the kingship for himself, leading a revolt that would see the establishment of a permanent Roman presence in Asia for over fifteen hundred years. A conversation with Naomi Pitamber (Clark University) about the art and architecture of the empire of Nicaea (Nikaia), the convention name of the Roman state that emerged in Asia Minor after the disaster of 1204. This art is often overlooked by scholars and overshadowed by the Palaiologan "Renaissance" that supposedly kicked in after the return to Constantinople in 1261. Naomi casts that development as a continuation of the art of Nikaia in her recent book Byzantium and the Landscapes of Loss: The Recreation of Constantinople in the Laskarid and Palaiologan Eras (Cambridge University Press 2026).
